In the world of photography, where creators often find themselves working in isolation, the struggle for connection can weigh heavily. This sense of loneliness can be intensified in bustling, vibrant cities like New York City, where life moves at a dizzying pace, making it tricky for artists to find a supportive community. It was this very realization that sparked Erica Reade’s passion over a decade ago. Recognizing the need for a nurturing space for photographers to thrive, she founded the Camera of the Month Club (CMC) in 2014. Through this innovative collective, she fosters an environment where photographers from all walks of life can come together to explore, create, and form meaningful connections.
Erica’s journey into photography began in her early school years, where the fine arts captured her heart. Even as she pursued a more academic path studying human rights and getting her MA in International Affairs at New School University, photography always served as her creative outlet—a way to express herself and reconnect with the world. After years of wandering the globe for work, Erica discovered her real joy was in capturing the stories around her through her camera lens, especially in the vibrant streets of New York City.
In 2011, while working as Program Director at Leave Out Violence (LOVE), a nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth through the arts, Erica saw firsthand the transformative power of creativity. This experience inspired her to cultivate a similar nurturing atmosphere for photographers, where they could share their work, receive constructive feedback, and embark on their artistic journeys together. The first informal gathering of the Camera of the Month Club took place in September 2014, and a month later, she made Soho Photo Gallery the club’s permanent home—a decision that has allowed CMC to flourish and grow.
One of the standout features of the Camera of the Month Club is its monthly critique sessions, which offer a platform for members to gain constructive feedback on their work from their peers in a supportive environment. Erica plays an essential role in these sessions, her keen eye and deep understanding of photography ensuring that her insights resonate. Her feedback is thoughtful, combining meticulous technical critique with encouragement that motivates artists to push their boundaries. Many members find that these sessions are pivotal moments in their development, as Erica’s thoughtful guidance fosters growth and fuels their passion for photography.
What truly sets the Camera of the Month Club apart is the warm and inclusive atmosphere created under Erica’s leadership. It is a place where creativity flourishes and artists come together to learn, share, and uplift one another. The club is discerning in its selection of new members, ensuring that each individual’s passion for photography and dedication to community shines through. With Erica and the board of directors personally vetting applications, they maintain high standards that uphold CMC’s positive reputation. This commitment to fostering a close-knit community is evident in the guidance provided by volunteer co-directors like Carlos Juarbe, Taranita Costales, Ashton Gooding, and Charlie Lederer, alongside Erica.
Beyond the monthly critiques, the Camera of the Month Club also hosts annual exhibitions showcasing the incredible talents of its members. These exhibitions not only highlight individual achievements but also celebrate the collective progress made through CMC. With Erica’s expertise in curating these showcases, the exhibitions consistently reflect a cohesive and captivating narrative, solidifying CMC’s important role in the contemporary photography landscape.
Perhaps one of the most touching aspects of the Camera of the Month Club is the personal stories of growth and connection shared by its members. Many photographers come to CMC feeling lost and uncertain, only to find mentorship, lasting friendships, and a renewed enthusiasm for their craft. New members often leave their first meeting with a sense of gratitude, and the long-time members frequently emphasize the deep bonds they’ve formed within this artistic community. Even after relocating or taking breaks from photography, many have maintained connections through Zoom calls and WhatsApp chats, especially during the pandemic. These friendships have proven enduring, demonstrating the profound impact CMC has not only on members’ artistic pursuits but also in their personal lives.
As CMC approaches its ten-year anniversary, there’s a palpable sense of excitement in the air. From October 8th to 14th, the club will host a series of events, including a group exhibition and critique workshops at Soho Photo Gallery, to honor its members’ achievements, strengthen community ties, and celebrate a decade of creativity and collaboration.
Under Erica Reade’s expert guidance, the Camera of the Month Club continues to evolve while staunchly committing to fostering creativity, exploration, and community spirit. Her vision and dedication have enriched the New York City photography scene, leaving an indelible mark on countless emerging artists. Erica is not just a pioneer; she is a mentor whose influence is likely to inspire countless generations of photographers. Because of her efforts, CMC stands as a beacon of artistic growth and community connection, lighting the way for many to express and explore their passion for photography for years to come.
